Ask a YouTube video

Chat with a YouTube video and get the exact moment

Chat with any public YouTube video without rewatching it. Paste the link, let VideoNote make the transcript, then ask what you need. Each answer comes from the video itself and cites the moment as a timestamp you can click to play.

In short

VideoNote lets you chat with a YouTube video. Paste a public link, and once the transcript is ready, the Ask tab answers your questions from what the video actually says, in under 150 words, citing moments as [m:ss] timestamps you can click to play.

Without an account you get 1 question a day, or 3 a day signed in free with Google. Pro passes include 90 to 4,200 questions, up to 60 a day, starting at ₹79 for 7 days. Chats are not saved.

How it works

How to chat with a YouTube video in three steps

  1. 01

    Paste a public video link

Copy the link of a public YouTube video, paste it in the box above and press Make notes. Links from Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and many other sites work too.

  2. 02

    VideoNote reads the whole video

The chat works from the transcript: YouTube captions when we can get them, otherwise the audio transcribed by Whisper large v3 turbo and then deleted.

  3. 03

    Ask your question

Open the Ask tab and type a question. The answer stays under 150 words and cites moments as [m:ss], so you can check it against the video.

How Ask answers

Answers from the video, with the moment attached

When the transcript is ready, open the Ask tab and type a question, or tap a starter such as Explain the main idea simply. The answer is written from the video's transcript, not from a web search, and points to the moments it used as timestamps like [12:40].

Every timestamp in an answer is a button. On YouTube it plays the embedded player from that moment. For other sites it jumps to that line in the transcript.

Answers are kept short, under 150 words. If the video does not cover your question, the answer says so in one sentence, then adds a brief general answer marked Outside the video. You always know which part came from your teacher and which is general knowledge, which matters when an exam follows the lecture.

Ask remembers the last 6 messages, so you can follow up with explain that more simply without repeating the question.

On long videos, Ask reads the parts of the transcript that best match the words in your question, so using the speaker's own terms, such as the name of a theorem, helps it find the right part.

Questions that work

Good questions to ask a lecture or tutorial

  • Go over one step again

Explain the step at 12:40 again, more slowly. Useful when a derivation went past too fast.

  • Find a formula or definition

What formula did he use for compound interest, and where does he first write it? You get the answer and the moment to check it.

  • Locate a topic

Where does she talk about recursion? Handy when you need ten minutes of a two hour class.

  • Check what matters

What are the three reasons she gives for the policy, and which one does she stress most? A quick check of your notes against what was said.

Tip: ask one specific question at a time. Free questions are limited, so read the notes for the overview and use Ask for what is still unclear.

Pro passes are prepaid final prices that never renew automatically, and a Pro video is also limited by the video time left on the pass. See pricing and the Terms for the full allowance.

Privacy

Your chats are not saved

Ask chats are not saved. They are cleared when you open another video or reload the page. To answer, your question, the recent chat and matching transcript lines are sent to Groq, our AI provider in the United States, and are not stored on our server.

Videos are never stored either. When audio is needed for a transcript, it is deleted as soon as the transcript is made, and your notes stay in your own browser. The Privacy Policy lists everything we keep and who processes it.

What you get

Ask works best next to the notes and flashcards

Every video you chat with also gets the rest of the study set from the same link, with no extra step: study notes with a clickable chapter timeline, flashcards, a quiz and the full timestamped transcript. A good habit is to read a chapter first, then ask about the part that did not click.

Questions

Questions about chatting with a YouTube video

Can I ask AI questions about a YouTube video?

Yes. Paste a public YouTube link into VideoNote and press Make notes. When the transcript is ready, open the Ask tab and type your question. The answer comes from the video's transcript and cites the moments it used as timestamps, which you can click to play that part of the video.

How many free questions do I get?

1 question a day without an account, or 3 a day when you sign in free with Google. Pro passes include 90 questions for a week, 350 for a month or 4,200 for a year, with up to 60 questions a day. Free limits reset at midnight India time.

Does the AI answer from the video or from the internet?

From the video. Ask reads the video's transcript and cites the moments it used. It does not search the web. If the video does not cover your question, the answer says so first, then adds a short general answer marked Outside the video, so you can tell the two apart.

Are my chats saved?

No. Ask chats are not saved on our server or in your browser. They are cleared when you open another video or reload the page. Your notes, flashcards and quiz for your last 12 videos do stay in your own browser.

Does it work on long videos?

Free videos can be up to 30 minutes. With a Pro pass a video can be up to 4 hours, or the video time left on your pass if that is less. On long videos, Ask reads the parts of the transcript that best match the words in your question, so naming the topic or term you mean helps.

Does it work for videos without captions?

Yes. If we cannot get captions for a YouTube video, VideoNote transcribes its audio with Whisper large v3 turbo and deletes the audio straight after. This uses audio transcription minutes: 10 a day without an account, 20 signed in, and 36 minutes to 30 hours on a Pro pass. Ask then works on that transcript as usual.
